AI Chiefs Call for a Slowdown, Chip Stocks Tumble

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging AI companies to slow the pace of frontier model development so safety work can keep up with rapid capability gains. Sam Altman (OpenAI), Demis Hassabis (Google DeepMind) and Elon Musk (xAI) backed the call β€” a rare alignment among rivals.

The proposal is not a halt to model training but a more measured pace with stronger checks on advanced systems. Markets still read it as a threat to compute demand:

  • Nasdaq 100 futures pointed to a drop of more than 1.5%
  • Memory and chip names β€” Intel, AMD, Marvell, Micron, SanDisk β€” fell 5–7%
  • SoftBank closed down about 11%, South Korea’s Kospi fell 3%, TSMC around 2%
  • Chip stocks are down roughly 20% since June β€” bear-market territory

The debate is far from settled: the White House rejected slowdown calls citing competition with China, while Beijing argued a pause would entrench existing dominance. For companies planning technology roadmaps, it is a reminder that AI policy now shapes infrastructure cost and availability.
